Thursday night the rains came. Jamy and I were downstairs in Chris’ family room… umm… watching The Grifters. Hehehe. When we heard the winds pickup.
I made my way upstairs to the terrace and saw the lightning storm repeatedly strike the water off the coast. It was really cool. I thought of going to get the video camera to film it… but then I remembered that episode of AMF where the idiot doing the same thing was actually struck… and decided to just appreciate it with my organic (slightly less electric-conductive) eyes and just write about it later...
The wind blows so strong here that storms don’t last too long. But the rains that followed sure did. Well, they lasted all day Friday anyway. It was a nice light rain that lasted from Thursday night well into Friday night and was very much needed. It hadn’t rained a drop since Jamy and I arrived. So we took the opportunity to go down the street and catch a movie on Friday evening. “Once Upon A Time in Mexico.” It wasn’t that great… but being able to read Johnny Depp’s really bad (and barely humorous) lines in Portuguese subtitles made it way more enjoyable. “Are you a Mexican… or a Mexican’t?” Being one of few English speakers in the audience who understood the spoken dialogue, I was the only one who laughed out loud.
So today, Saturday is another nice sunny day here in Maputo. Chris took off for the long weekend. He took his car and went to visit some friends in Swaziland! Leaving us free to stay at his place and spend the weekend gathering furniture for our new apartment (which we hope to do in the next hour or so).
So, before getting ready to go out, I grabbed my camera to take some final photos of Chris’ place before we leave it behind. In front of his house, across the street are some local vendors selling some hand-crafted wares. Behind the house is his view of the Ocean and some cabanas… And I’m not sure how much the rain affected this or not, but this morning was the first time I noticed the “lizard meet-up” he’s got going on his driveway.
One large and several smaller lizards were scurrying and hopping around catching low-flying bugs and mosquitoes. I tried to get some photos… but they move really fast! I’ve never really seen lizards hop like this. It was fun to watch for a while. Oh well. Enjoy the photos. More will come, we promise!!! Thanks for all the interest and comments. It’s nice to know people are actually reading this crazy thing!
And wish us luck trying to barter for whicker furniture down by the coast “De Sol.”
