OK I know what you are thinking after reading of my visit to Maputo - or at least what my wife Christina is thinking: that it sounds a little suspicious that my so-called "Malawian stomach virus" just happened to come the morning after the 5-liter beers, some place called "Mambos" and of course the traditional African village ceremony called "tequila shots". Which by the way was Dan's idea as I recall. I will admit, though, that the thought did cross my mind when I first awoke feeling pukey on Sunday morning. As a matter of fact I remember thinking to myself that this seemed to be the most horrible hangover I had ever had in my life; I even was at the point where I think I actually would have made one of those promises to “never ever drink again” and actually follow through with it. But I quickly realized that the 5 hours of projectile vomiting, dry-heaving, sweating and generally wanting to die were clearly something more than a reeeaaaalllly bad hangover. But yes I will concede that the “beer bongs” (the 5-liter tubes looked like big water bongs filled with beer and with a tap on the bottom) and tequila probably did not help the situation. Luckily, the whole time I was comforted by the fact that Dan & Jamy were -- in case I needed them -- not far away at the pool lounge having fruity drinks and worrying about me.

Anyway, my short visit to Mozambique was great, rest assured that Dan & Jamy are doing great and loving life. Maputo is a vibrant and fun city, and they are already acting like those expats that have lived in a place so long they don’t really remember how to be American. They talk about certain bars or night spots the way we talk of places in the city where we grew up – “yeah, we could go to Aguila Bar (made up name to protect innocent Maputo hot spots) , but you know how that is on Thursday nights, it gets so crowded, and it’s the teenager crowd – nothing like their Saturday nights.” Keep in mind this was after being in the country for about 3 weeks.

By the way I promised them I would spread the word that they are both working really hard . . . it is not all fun and games like it seems on the blog . . . Man, they are working their asses off. Really, I swear.

So in sum, we had a great visit, we shared stories and local beer and not-so-local liquor, we emptied a good part of the Indian Ocean of their stock of shrimp, we logged in some good pool time, I puked a lot, and Dan & Jamy are totally in their element.

Thanks for the kind words my friend. And again, hope you had a very happy birthday the other week!!

And as Geoff alluded too, Jamy and I have learned soo much about Maputo's Nightlife (torch song: "is that all there is?"), we felt the need to branch out... so we took an international walk-about to the furthest reaches of South Africa... you know, just to see what kind of bars they have there.

So here we are at in internet cafe in Cape Town, using linux terminals (all with matrix screen savers ;) ((although a wee bit dated, these Afrikans do have some style)) and listening to some zaney loud house-music (which sounds like being in outerspace, with a beat) at 10:30 in the morning. And we just found out they sell "nature burgers" here... so I think Jamy is ready to move in or at least set-up camp here for a little while.

We are renting a really comfy flat within sight (barely) of the Ocean(s) for the next few days. And so far we luv what we see here Cape Town. It was a *censored* to get here: 1-day on a giant bus and 2-full days of driving that we split into 3. So, we are now here and ready for some much needed R&R. (Anyone know how much will it cost us to fly back to Maputo???????)

Jamy's research is going well and trip, though difficult, is a great success. We have many a story to tell (and that's putting it mildly: the south african bus driver smoking cigarettes while pumping gas, making it out of Jo-Burg with all our belongings, the B&B proprieter who was soo chatty she all-but forgot to feed us and provide us with shelter, not-to-mention the wild-life (rabbits, rabbits & more rabbits!) open-air night drive that was so freezing our lips almost fell off, and of course there is the "driving farmer's tan" which has permantly blackened the right side of my body) and about 300 pictures!!! (i luv digital cameras) to upload and post. (Wish I had brought the video camera... oh well).

So in conclusion, I would like to wish my dad a very happy birthday and a big congratulations to Chris & Yvonne on the birth of their second bambino!
