    Mugabe's Human Rubbish Dump

Thousands of street stalls demolished. More than 23,000 informal workers arrested. Entire neighbourhoods burnt to the ground or razed by bulldozers. Hundreds of thousands of poor people left homeless in the middle of winter.

More about Mozambique in the news...from today's New York Times:

AIDS, Pregnancy and Poverty Trap Ever More African Girls

Orphaned and impoverished by the deaths of parents, girls here are being propelled into sex at shockingly early ages to support themselves, their siblings and, all too often, their own children.

Here's an infinitely more important article on Mozambique (the article I should have pitched but didn't). AIDS in Mozambique

Mozambique's health ministry spent $50 million to fight AIDS. The United States dropped $27 million last year and will donate $48 million more in 2005. From the passenger seat of a pickup truck bumping along a teeth-grinding road in one of the most infected parts of the country, Aurelio Gomes has just one question: Where is the money?

And you all thought we were lying when we said we love it here.... Check out Sunday's feature on Mozambique in the New York Times.

Ok, not that I'm bitter or paranoid or anything, but on January 5th I pitched a suspiciously similar article to the NYT and got no reply. Coincidence? (Nope)

    About Our Blog

    Highlights of Dan's Alcohoroscope:

    SAGITTARIUS

    Drinking style:
In vino veritas - and, for Sagittarius, in booze blurtiness: When buttered, they'll spill all your secrets and many of their own...Good-natured hijinks are sure to ensue (including a high possibility of loopy groping; spontaneous Sag is a brilliant booty call).

    Drinking buddies:
The Bush twins, Betty Ford, Brad Pitt, Keith Richards, Frank Sinatra, Anna Nicole Smith, Britney Spears.

I don't know about brilliant, but definitely some booty callin'....

South Africa to Censor American TV

...Trikamjee responded to complaints regarding the Americanisation of society as a result of American TV programmes being broadcast. He referred to young people who, as a result, begin to copy the American culture rather than appreciating their own.

Trikamjee referred to "American junk", but said one of the dilemmas was that the American programmes attract the most viewers and generate the most revenue....

    HARARE ZIMBABWE DISCOUNT HOTELS!

Hotels in Harare, Zimbabwe can be quite expensive, especially during the peak season. Although hotels near the center at Harare, Zimbabwe obviously have their attraction, they might be fully booked earlier on and slightly more pricey. You may be able to find a better rate if you book ahead or if you are willing to be a short walk from the main attractions.

Hmm, do you suspect there's a catch?

Snips & ClipsOk, maybe we were a little flippant about rhinos after our trip to Mkyaya where we saw so many we got, well, bored. Truth is they are rare, beautiful (in their own way, of course), and apparently sensitive to the cold and dumb authors....
