    Book Buzz

Our Book Buzz category has been rather pathetic from the inception of this blog, thanks to me, mostly because though we live in Africa, we haven't necessarily read African writers. Are we sorry about that? Yes. Are we embarrassed to admit it? Absolutely. So, when the Caine Prize Shortlist was announced on April 2Oth, we thought we’d use it as an opportunity to enhance our Book Buzz.

Who ever heard of a Grandfather who can’t fix a computer?” This is one of my favorite little-kid-lines, care of Dan’s niece, Angela, who gave her Papa a whole lotta grief for his less-than-standard printing skills…. And, she has a point.

    Road Trips

So we're going to an elephant reserve to do some overnight camping and we're going to have a little braai by the praia.

But what do you bring to meet the elephants? Pants, paints, shorts, scrabble, bathing suits? Can you bring an acoustic guitar? What if the elephants don't like the songs? Don't tell me you've never seen pissed off pachyderm? It ain't pretty. They huff, snuff, snarl and stomp their feet and flap their ears as if to fly away. Imagine something as cute and spunky as Gidget, as unpredictable as a Flying Nun, crossed with an ornery Snuffleupagus. All the while, keeping in mind, that at any time they could just walk on top of you. (There's a puzzle there somewhere). ((I think)).

    Life In Maputo

"In a town full of rubber plants"

One day last week I was coming home from work at about 6:30pm on a weekday (Yes! I actually work late on occasion these days). I hopped out of my friend's car and made my usual way across the street and passed the Greek pizzeria 'El Greco', located at the base of our building. I looked in the window and saw very little activity. Not uncommon, most respectable people would not be caught dead going go out to eat in Maputo till at least 8:30. But it made me think how it's strange that Jamy & I never eat here. It's the closest restaurant to our apartment... It's practically in our apartment. Some people (like Jumpin Johnny D) say they have (or had) the best pizza in town! But we've not liked it the 2 times we've been there... (Cheese bread without any tomatoes or sauce is not Jamy's favorite, nor is my fave a steak that's as tough as a boot and looks like one too). And so we pass by it every day. It's not even an option in our mind anymore. Just a landmark to tell people where we live.

Life In MaputoSo, last night I was sitting on the couch typing on the laptop when I felt an itch on the back of my knee. I reached down and felt something there, something hard and kind of crusty. I looked at it. Piece of dirt? I tried to brush it away but it wouldn’t budge. Why? Because it was no piece of dirt...

    About Our Blog

I can hear the groans already. Just from the title. "New Perspective?" Is this going to be another one of those preachy posts? Or is this just where the blog gets boring? Relax. It's a little bit of both. I'm off my "digital soap-box" (most popular blog title thus far) for the time being, and this just in: all our posts are boring... shocking, I'm sure.

And lately they have been more boring than ever. So, why the new perspective? Well, for one thing we finally got a new digital camera! Our's died last November shortly after Steve's visit. Coincidence? (What? You didn't even notice there haven't been any new photo galleries?) Well, the hate mail is still rolling in... so we knew we had to do something. And fast.
