Book BuzzYou've seen her counting cards at the Washington Post. (Shark!) You've seen her hike her way across the pages of the Washingtonian. (Slowly but surely). Well now she's really smoking, as she lands herself smack dab in the middle of The Sun. Magazine that is.

Book BuzzOver the Christmas holidays Dan and I had a visit from Morpheus. He held a copy of Confessions of an Economic Hit Man by John Perkins and he said, "you can either choose the blue pill by not reading this book, and continue life as you know it in your little corner of the good life...or choose the red pill and read the book that will open your eyes to the way the world really is...."

    Book Buzz

Our Book Buzz category has been rather pathetic from the inception of this blog, thanks to me, mostly because though we live in Africa, we haven't necessarily read African writers. Are we sorry about that? Yes. Are we embarrassed to admit it? Absolutely. So, when the Caine Prize Shortlist was announced on April 2Oth, we thought we’d use it as an opportunity to enhance our Book Buzz.

    Book Buzz

“The world that is coming is your world, you know how to tread in the mud without getting your feet dirty. They must wear the shoes of falsehood and the socks of betrayal. The truth is this: you should leave... You are a good fruit on a rotten tree. You are the groundnut in a sack full of rats. They’ll gobble you up before you can cause them any discomfort. The problem is the pasture where your colleagues graze. You don’t know how the pasture is made: it has to be cut, not in order to kill it, but so that it will grow all the stronger. We pity you because you’re a foolish man. By this, I mean you are a good man. You were pulled out of the pool where the toads were, and you jumped into the one where the crocodiles live.”

Excerpt from “Under the Frangipani” by Mia Couto.

Book BuzzI think I mentioned in one of my earlier posts that Jamy and I picked up some Portuguese literature in the Polana Shopping Center just down the street. (It’s actually across the street from our new apartment, that we WILL BE OFFICIALLY MOVING INTO TOMORROW, yes I know we keep saying that, but we mean it this time!).
